The United Nations is expected to tell Americans to cut back on their meat consumption to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite serving meat products during its COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. will release its global food systems’ road map during the two-week climate summit, which began Nov. 30. On Sunday, the conference will dedicate a day, for the first time ever, to food systems. In the anticipated report, the U.N. agency is expected to tell Americans to lower their meat intake, according to Bloomberg.

Meat is on the menu for thousands of government officials, environmental activists, and business officials, including briskets, ribs, Wagyu burgers, and barbecue classics. The summit also has a number of vegan options available, including plant-friendly chick'n burgers, and local cuisine from the first plant-based meat factory in the UAE.

“FAO emphasizes the critical need for an innovative plan and a concrete package of solutions to overhaul agrifood systems," an organization official told Fox News Digital.

The global road map is a strategic tool used to show how “accelerated climate actions can transform agrifood systems” while “addressing food security and nutrition challenges today and in the future without breaching the 1.5 degrees threshold,” according to the FAO.

The U.N. has a goal of limiting the temperature rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

A recent FAO report shows that the world's meat production in 2023 was anticipated to be equivalent to 365 million tons, representing a 0.8% increase from 2022. FAO data show that 14.5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are connected to livestock farming. In North America alone, meat accounts for an average of 4.1 carbon dioxide equivalents.
