Hundreds of San Francisco and Oakland commuters were stalled by a protest that shut down the Bay Bridge for four hours, affecting those heading into San Francisco on Thursday morning.

The pro-Palestinian protest had closed all of the westbound lanes on the bridge's eastern span just before morning rush hour, which begins at 8 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The bridge reopened shortly before noon Pacific time.

Here is a breakdown of everything to know about Thursday's protest.

Demonstrators shut down the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge in conjunction with the APEC Summit taking place Thursday.

How many people were at the protest, and how many arrests were there?

The California Highway Patrol did not have a clear answer on how many people participated in the protest on Thursday, but the agency told the Washington Examiner that 50 people were arrested in the protest and 15 cars were towed. It is not clear whether the protesters will face any charges because charging people is decided by the district attorney's office.

How long did the closure and the protest last?

Roads were closed for approximately four hours, according to the patrol, but the protest itself lasted until noon Eastern time, when dispersal orders were issued and arrests started.

What were the demonstrators protesting?

The protesters were calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Thousands have been killed on both sides, including a high amount of women and children. The Arab Resource and Organizing Center said the protest was to draw the Biden administration's focus to alleged war crimes occurring in Gaza as the president hosts cocktail parties in the liberal city.

"[The president] could end the genocide in #Gaza TODAY. Instead he's using our tax $$ to pay for it and hosting cocktail parties in the SF Bay Area," the center posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "Bay Area has shut down the Bay Bridge demanding CeasefireNOW. There is no business as usual."

President Joe Biden visited the city for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

There have been several similar protests since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7. The most recent protest occurred outside of the Democratic National Committee headquarters on Wednesday night and turned violent. One protester was arrested in the incident and charged with assaulting a police officer.

Hundreds of thousands of pro-Israel supporters also gathered on the National Mall this week for a peaceful rally in Washington, D.C.
