TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before Congress on Thursday in an effort to quell concerns about the social media platform and its ties to communist China . His testimony, however, had the opposite effect.

His refusal to shine some light on TikTok’s parent company ByteDance and its relationship with China only served to bolster the case that TikTok is Chinese spyware and that it is being used maliciously by the Chinese government to spy on and undermine the United States.

CRIME IS A BASIC CITY EXPERIENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO

Perhaps the most revealing moment during Chew’s testimony came after a question from Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), who asked Chew whether China influences the content shown on TikTok in the U.S. and elsewhere. Chew refused to say whether he is 100% sure that China wouldn’t force TikTok to boost pro-Beijing content in the event that China invaded Taiwan, instead claiming that TikTok is committed to keeping the site “free from any manipulation by any government.”

Chew was also asked several times about his perspective on the Chinese government’s persecution of the Uyghur people. He refused to condemn China’s human rights atrocities — probably because ByteDance has been helping China cover them up.

And, despite multiple reports that TikTok collects data from its users and even tracks the location of certain U.S. journalists, Chew refused to admit that this was a form of spyware. “I don’t think that spying is the right way to describe it,” he said, later claiming that TikTok’s ability to collect and store data from U.S. users is a “complex topic.”

There’s nothing complex about it. TikTok is a weapon of the Chinese Communist Party. It is being used to spy on American citizens and flood young minds with pro-Chinese propaganda. Chew’s non-answers confirmed as much on Thursday.

Congress must take action — the sooner, the better.
