NextImg:Baltimore to receive $350 million check in first payment toward massive project to repair Francis Scott Key bridge - Washington Examiner

The insurer of the Francis Scott Key Bridge is set to send a $350 million check to Maryland, as the state continues the recovery and rebuilding process of the collapsed bridge.

Chubb is preparing to issue the payment, the Wall Street Journal reports, which would be on the higher limit of the insurance plan for the bridge. The first of several payments is expected in the coming weeks and is set to be the first significant payment over the collapse.

The payment is being made as the officials from the city have filed a lawsuit against the owners and operators of the Dali, which struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, for damages over the incident. The crash of the Dali in the early morning hours of March 26, caused the 47-year-old bridge to collapse — killing six construction workers in the process.

Officials announced on Wednesday that they recovered the body of the fifth victim from the site of the bridge collapse. Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, was the fifth of six victims recovered. The sixth victim still remains missing.

“We remain dedicated to the ongoing recovery operations while knowing behind each person lost in this tragedy lies a loving family,” Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., Maryland Department of State Police superintendent, said in a statement on Wednesday. “Along with our local, state and federal partners, we ask that everyone extend their deepest sympathies and support to the families during this difficult time.”

The Port of Baltimore announced earlier this week it plans to remove the Dali from the port by May 10, with the intention of opening channel access of a depth of 45 feet at that time, as the recovery and cleanup continues.

Officials also said that they expect to open the permanent 700-foot wide, 50-foot deep channel by the end of the month.
