Liberal judges continue to distort the criminal justice system to reach their preferred policy goals or, as shown in a recent case in Baltimore, punish victims of crime who are not on their political team.
The case in Baltimore is that of Patrick Brice, a 28-year-old man who beat two elderly men. Brice rushed and tackled the first man, and then shoved the second man to the ground when he tried to intervene, punching and kicking him in the head as he lay defenseless on the sidewalk. The first victim, who was attacked unprovoked by Brice, suffered a “serious eye injury.” A witness said he was “out cold for several minutes.”

For nearly killing two elderly men, Brice was given no prison time. He was convicted of two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment and will only have to serve one year of home detention and three years of probation. Again, Brice, who said he “snapped on one day” into this violent rage, could have murdered these two elderly men with the amount of force he used in the beatings. One of the victims was out cold for several minutes, and he kicked the other in the head with full force as if he were kicking a soccer ball, but he will receive no jail time for any of it.
That is because the two victims were pro-life activists, and the beating occurred outside of a Planned Parenthood where the two elderly men were demonstrating. Judge Yvette Bryant decided that Brice did not intend to cause the serious injuries he did, so she acquitted him of the felony charge he faced in a retrial and sentenced him to no jail time when prosecutors were seeking a reasonable 10-year sentence.

Bryant was elected in deep-blue Baltimore last year with more votes than any other judicial candidate, nearly five times as many votes as the Trump-Vance presidential ticket received in the city. In a reversed scenario, it is hard to imagine that a young pro-life man nearly killing two elderly abortion enthusiasts would get a similarly soft sentence from liberal Baltimore’s top elected judge. And yet, that is exactly what happened here because the political circumstances changed the calculation for Baltimore’s “justice” system.
This is how the justice system has devolved in multiple communities across the country, as liberal judges or liberal “prosecutors” choose to ignore the law or facts of a case to achieve their political goals. The result is judicial decay and more violent communities, with criminals such as Brice being the biggest beneficiaries.
