Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Tuesday that the department would soon announce its latest aid package to Ukraine valued at more than $2.3 billion.

The secretary met with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov at the Pentagon, where he previewed the aid.

“I am proud that the United States will soon announce more than $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine,” Austin said. “This package, under presidential drawdown authority, will provide more air defense interceptors, anti-tank weapons, and other critical weapons from U.S. inventories. It will also enable the United States to procure more Patriot and [National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System] air defense interceptors, which will be provided on an accelerated timeline.”

Umerov expressed his gratitude for the U.S.’s continued military support and said, “With that support, we will stop Russia, stop the aggression.”

Last month, the administration announced that it would prioritize Ukraine’s air defense needs over other allies who had previously purchased U.S. equipment. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at that time that Ukrainians should start receiving these interceptors this summer, and the goal is to provide them with enough equipment to last the next 16 months.

The Biden administration also revoked some of its restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S. aid, allowing it to use U.S.-provided weapons to hit targets in Russia near the border.

This aid package precedes next week’s NATO summit, which is set to take place in Washington.

Austin said alongside Umerov that they would “take steps to build a bridge to NATO membership for Ukraine,” and his Ukrainian counterpart added, “Hopefully soon Ukraine will receive its invitation.”
