Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin issued a memorandum to the military on Wednesday announcing that the department “will make a calm, orderly, and professional transition” to the incoming Trump administration.
The secretary, who served in the role for the entirety of the Biden administration, said in the memo that “the U.S. military will stand ready to carry out the policy choices of its next Commander in Chief, and to obey all lawful orders from its civilian chain of command.”
“The US military will also continue to stand apart from the political arena; to stand guard over our republic with principle and professionalism; and to stand together with the valued allies and partners who deepen our security,” he added.
President-elect Donald Trump is set to become the second president to serve two nonconsecutive terms. He will be able to further the goals from his first administration and try to undo policies that President Joe Biden implemented.
Ahead of the election, Trump seemingly suggested that the military could be deployed domestically to quell any election-related violence or chaos.

Trump is likely to undo many of Biden’s policies regarding diversity and inclusion, which conservatives have long derided. During the campaign, the former president also promised to undo the Biden Defense Department’s decision to rename nine military bases that had been named after Confederate military leaders.
His unorthodox governing style during his first administration has allies and adversaries wary about whether his second term could be filled with more of the same.
