Elected officials across Arizona are demanding that President Joe Biden make time during his trip to the state later this week to visit the Mexico border and see how out of control the immigrant crisis has become.
Frustrated lawmakers, law enforcement, and mayors told the Washington Examiner that a trip to the entrenched border state without acknowledging the chaotic situation was not an option.
“It’s well past time for President Biden to see the border crisis firsthand and for the Administration to do its job, secure the border, and keep Arizona safe," said Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ). "While he’s in Arizona, I’m calling on him to visit the border to actually understand how our communities shoulder the burden of his Administration's failure to address this crisis — and then follow the law to quickly provide our communities the long-overdue resources they need to stay safe and secure.”
The White House announced last week that Biden would attend a $3,300-per-plate Democratic fundraiser Wednesday and then an event honoring the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in Phoenix on Thursday.
First-term Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) said his southeastern Arizona district that stretches from the border town of Nogales to Tucson has been significantly affected by the flow of immigrants, which organized crime groups in Mexico push across to overwhelm Border Patrol agents and then move in criminals and drugs in unmanned areas.
"President Biden will be less than 200 miles away from the border and yet, will not make any effort to see the disastrous effects his lax policies have created," Ciscomani said. "As numbers surge and morale among Border Patrol plummets, this administration continues to turn a blind eye to our border crisis. Under this president, every state is a border state, affecting Americans across the country alike."
Border Patrol data released last weekend showed that 11,000 immigrants were arrested for entering the country illegally last week. Many are released into the communities after processing, placing a burden on local and state governments.
A Washington Examiner trip to Nogales this spring revealed that U.S. customs officers have seized more fentanyl hidden on pedestrians and in vehicles seeking admission than any other of the 328 land, air, and sea ports nationwide.
In Phoenix, Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) called Biden's anticipated absence "sadly unsurprising."
“Since taking office in January 2021, President Biden’s dereliction of duty at the border has repeatedly shown Americans that he will do everything possible to incentivize illegal immigration and to empower dangerous cartels," Lesko said in a statement. "Though it is disappointing President Biden will not use his visit to Arizona to resolve the myriad of issues he has created at the border, it is sadly unsurprising."
At the most western corner of the state, Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls said he was "disheartened" but said he could still take steps on the ground in Arizona to see what is unfolding.
"If the president's security situation makes it impossible for him to visit the border while he is in Arizona, then that should be an indicator of how critical the situation is," Nicholls said in a statement Wednesday. "If he will not go see the border, he could convene with the group of a dozen Arizonan leaders while on his trip to hear about the crisis and its local impacts directly, instead of continuing to ignore it."
Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is running in the Republican primary to replace Sinema next November and has hinged much of his messaging on the state of the border.
"We are in the midst of a major crisis of human and drug trafficking at our southern border. It is not only affecting our border communities, but all of Arizona and the entire nation," Lamb wrote in an email. "Over the past three years, the President hasn't been bothered to address these issues, and continues to bury his head in the sand as Americans suffer every day from this crisis."

Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, which includes Ciscomani's congressional district, criticized not only the Biden administration but also lawmakers in Washington who "point the blame at one another" yet do not fix the problem.
"This avoidance and abandonment continues as President Biden visits Arizona this week, a border state, with no intent of visiting our southern border," Dannels wrote in an email. "This action is a continued message that those Americans living in our border communities and those that wear a badge, have been abandoned. Simply stated, an insult by our nation’s leaders!"

In Texas, one senior House Republican said it does not matter if Biden shows up to the border in Arizona because his legacy has already been set in stone.
“I don’t know what else Biden has to see — he has created the worst border crisis in the history of the country. He is fully informed on the depth of the crisis he created, and a photo-op at the border is not what the American people need from our commander in chief," said House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX). "This move adds insult to injury as the president continues to disrespect and neglect his responsibilities."

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate and could face off against Sinema, did not respond to a request for comment, nor did his campaign.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the White House for comment.
