The Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team is hosting a special Catholic night on Friday, a first for the Phoenix-based team.

The Diamondbacks, locked in a battle for a National League wild-card spot for MLB playoffs with just three days to go in the regular season, are hosting the spirit night in partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix for Friday's game against the Houston Astros. A portion of proceeds from tickets sold will benefit local Catholic schools.

HOW WILL A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AFFECT NATIONAL PARKS?

The event comes some three months after the Diamondbacks NL West rival the Los Angeles Dodgers honored the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of LGBT activist drag queens who use Christian and Catholic imagery in profane and sexually explicit ways.

The decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence was sharply criticized by Catholics, who said the group's displays were offensive and showed that anti-Catholic rhetoric is still an acceptable form of prejudice. The Dodgers initially rescinded the invitation to the group after criticisms were raised, but it later restored it, and the event went on as planned.

In a statement, Catholic League President Bill Donohue praised the Diamondbacks for hosting the spirit night for Catholics.

"In June, we led a culture war against the Los Angeles Dodgers for honoring a vile anti-Catholic gay group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence," Donohue said. "The message was delivered to Major League Baseball — Catholics are fed up being insulted by the elites. That is why events like 'Catholic Night' are welcomed. It is a stark rebuke to religious bigots."
