The mess playing out in New York between Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams is entirely the work of corrupt and incompetent Democrats. At some point, this reality should be embarrassing for voters in New York who have chosen to empower the New York Democratic Party.
In one corner is Adams, who was facing federal charges for bribery and campaign finance violations. My colleague Byron York broke down the case, summarizing it as follows: “The basic charge was that Adams did favors for the government of Turkey in return for campaign contributions, free or discounted airline tickets, free high-end hotel rooms, and fancy meals.” Those charges against Adams were dropped by President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, which claimed they were the result of a politically motivated investigation by the Biden administration.
In the other corner is Hochul, who has been a leader in the push to get Adams to resign. Hochul is now considering removing Adams from office, despite New York City having a mayoral election later this year. Among the people Hochul is meeting with to consider this drastic step is activist Al Sharpton.
The whole debacle is embarrassing for everyone involved. Adams was elected because New Yorkers wanted a “tough on crime” mayor who was still a Democrat. At worst, Adams was exchanging favors with Turkey’s Islamist government. At best, he was the target of a politically motivated investigation because he butted heads with President Joe Biden on immigration. In the latter case, Adams was mainly whining that the federal government wasn’t giving him more money to handle the surge of illegal immigrants, even as he repeatedly promoted the city’s “sanctuary” status. The illegal immigration crisis in the Big Apple was one of his own making.

Hochul, meanwhile, is considering circumventing the will of New York City voters and injecting herself into the city’s election. She is doing this because she and other Democrats don’t like that Adams is aligning himself with Trump in order to secure the dropped charges. During this process, which should be treated with the utmost seriousness and professionalism, she is relying on the counsel of Al Sharpton, an antisemite, and promoter of hate crime hoaxes who is not part of the state or city government.
Both New York and New York City are Democratic havens because voters continue to choose these kinds of people to lead them. When they don’t like one kind of Democrat, they replace them with a different kind of Democrat. Both Adams and Hochul are replaceable cogs in the same incompetent Democratic machine, and the voters who chose to empower them are just as much to blame for this embarrassing feud as anyone else.
