The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management on Tuesday approved a wind project off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, that, when finished, is expected to be the country’s largest wind farm, capable of producing enough energy to power nearly 600,000 homes.

The Sunrise Wind project, an undertaking of renewable energy company Orsted and electric services provider Eversource, is the seventh offshore wind farm to be approved under the Biden administration. The project is expected to bring 942 megawatts to the grid, with an expected operation date in 2026.

“The Biden-Harris administration continues to make historic progress in developing the American offshore wind industry, which is paving the way for good-paying union jobs in manufacturing, shipbuilding and construction,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. “The Interior Department’s approval of the seventh offshore wind project marks another substantial step towards fulfilling our clean energy goals.”

The approval of the project represents a win in an industry that has struggled to take off, facing skyrocketing rising interest rates and supply chain hurdles.

The project will aim to help the state of New York reach its goals of delivering 70% renewably sourced electricity by 2030 and add to the Biden administration’s efforts to reach 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by the end of the decade.

The lease is set to include a fleet of turbines located approximately 16 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and more than 26 miles east of Montauk, New York. The project is expected to support more than 800 jobs each year during the project’s construction and 300 jobs annually during the operations phase.
