Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) blasted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Wednesday after the California Republican gave updates on the latest debt negotiations, blaming Democrats for being “extreme.”
“This guy swooned yesterday over MTG giving him $100k for a tube of cherry chapstick that touched his lips, so now he’s projecting his insecurity about it on TV,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response to McCarthy criticizing the Democratic representative by name. He also name-dropped Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

"If AOC and Bernie Sanders is going to run their party, that's not my fault," McCarthy told White House reporters Wednesday morning. "I'm not even sure Bernie Sanders is a registered Democrat."
"I can't help it if the Democrats have become so extreme, and now it's a party of Bernie Sanders than the party where Joe Biden was elected,” McCarthy said to reporters. “Joe Biden is the president of the United States. He is the head Democrat.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s response referenced McCarthy’s lip balm being auctioned off on Tuesday, a move that has received a flood of backlash from Democratic leaders.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) won with a $100,000 bid for McCarthy's used stick of lip balm at an impromptu GOP auction fundraiser on Tuesday. The Republican lawmakers took a 15-minute break from debt talks to participate in the auction, where McCarthy promised the winner a dinner with supporters and donors.
"I’m honored to be able to donate $100,000 to the [National Republican Congressional Committee] to help Republicans increase our majority in 2024 and defeat the Democrats,” Greene said in a statement to Politico.

With only eight days before the nation could fall into an unprecedented default, McCarthy said negotiations with the White House were in the works, telling White House reporters in an afternoon update that “there's a number of places that we are still far apart.”
