NextImg:'AOC funds genocide': Graffiti defaces campaign office, AOC rebukes ‘lies’ over Israel vote

A campaign office for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–NY) was vandalized over the weekend with bright red graffiti that read “AOC funds genocide in Gaza.”

Police responded to the scene around 1 a.m. Monday, after the slogan was discovered painted across the entrance. The vandalism comes in the wake of a contentious vote last week in which Ocasio-Cortez opposed a Republican-led amendment by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R–GA) that would have slashed $500 million from Israel’s missile defense funding. Ocasio-Cortez, who has vocally condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, defended her vote, arguing the amendment would only defund the defensive Iron Dome system, while leaving offensive weapon support untouched.

Ocasio-Cortez took to X on Monday to respond to the vandalism and growing criticism of her vote.

“Google is free. If you’re saying I voted for military funding, you are lying,” the New York congresswoman wrote. “Receipts attached. Drag me for my positions all you want, but lying about them doesn’t make you part of the ‘left.’ If you believe neo‑nazis are welcome and operating in good faith, you can have them!”

She added in another post: “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment does nothing to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza. Of course I voted against it. What it does do is cut off defensive Iron Dome capacities while allowing the actual bombs killing Palestinians to continue.”

“I have long stated that I do not believe that adding to the death count of innocent victims to this war is constructive to its end,” Ocasio-Cortez continued on X. “That is a simple and clear difference of opinion that has long been established. I remain focused on cutting the flow of US munitions that are being used to perpetuate the genocide in Gaza.”

Ocasio-Cortez attached screenshots confirming her “no” vote on both the amendment and the larger funding package, calling out critics for dishonesty.

Despite her defense, Ocasio-Cortez has continued to face criticism from within the progressive movement. The Democratic Socialists of America, a group that helped launch her political career, condemned her vote against Greene’s amendment.

“An arms embargo means keeping all arms out of the hands of a genocidal military, no exceptions,” DSA said. “We were further deeply disappointed by her clarifying statement on her position on the Iron Dome.”

Amid the fallout, Ocasio-Cortez continues to champion progressive allies. Last week, she welcomed New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani to Washington, D.C., hosting a “Communication and Organizing Skillshare Breakfast.”

Ocasio-Cortez was an early endorser of Mamdani, a self-described Muslim Democratic Socialist and state lawmaker from Queens. Mamdani has drawn criticism for his history of inflammatory rhetoric, including his past public calls to “globalize the Intifada.” The term “Intifada” — Arabic for “uprising” — has been used historically to describe violent Palestinian uprisings against Israel.

Ocasio-Cortez has not publicly commented on Mamdani’s use of the phrase, but her continued support of him signals alignment on broader foreign policy views, including opposition to United States military aid to Israel.

On a CNN panel in June, Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, called Mamdani the “Muslim AOC” and warned that Democrats are making a grave political miscalculation.

“This is fantastic news for the Trump administration … but disastrous for the city,” Goldberg said.
