Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) thinks that antisemitism is undermining the progressive movement. She has herself and her “Squad” to blame.
“Antisemitism is an assault on our values as Americans and especially as progressives,” Ocasio-Cortez said Monday. “Antisemitism is also a threat to a community that is a vital partner in our struggles against injustice. So when the Jewish community is threatened, the progressive movement is undermined.”
How weird, then, that the virulent antisemitism we are seeing at college protests is coming from students who are neck-deep in the ideology of the progressive movement.
Ocasio-Cortez should know this better than anyone. She has defended her fellow progressives, whether they be Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) or Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), as they have singled out Israel for criticism for daring to defend itself against Palestinian terrorists. Ocasio-Cortez has even engaged in this behavior herself, to the point that she cried over the House of Representatives voting to fund Israel’s defensive Iron Dome system, which exists solely to intercept missiles launched by Palestinian terrorists targeting Israeli civilians.

Omar’s and Tlaib’s antisemitic histories are well documented, yet Ocasio-Cortez stands by them with no issue. Even Ocasio-Cortez’s own view of the conflict, which is that Israel is somehow the antagonist while Palestinian terrorists go blameless, has helped cultivate the very antisemitism that she is condemning. She is trying to put out a fire that she and her ideological allies keep fueling.
Her condemnation is less likely to be sincere given her track record. More likely, Ocasio-Cortez sees the backlash building against her fellow progressives and their brazen antisemitism. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) appears to be on his way out, and Omar is facing a rematch against the candidate who nearly beat her in the 2022 primary. Ocasio-Cortez is worried about her political movement being tainted and perhaps even future primary woes, not about the tolerance of her progressive movement. Her track record and choice of allies make it clear her concerns are cynical, not sincere.
