Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed in a recent social media post that the current influx of immigrants illegally entering the country is "nothing" compared to the number of people who have come to America throughout history.

The New York representative shared her thoughts online about her state's struggle with immigration after New York Democrats called on the Biden administration for help in dealing with the influx of immigrants arriving in New York City. Ocasio-Cortez compared New York's immigration to Ellis Island, which helped process immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

“When it comes to people coming to New York City today, are nothing, I’m telling you, nothing, compared to the daily amounts of people that we saw coming in through Ellis Island in the first half of this century,” Ocasio-Cortez said in the video posted to her Instagram account.

Ocasio-Cortez also said that a total of 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924, which "far eclipsed what we’re seeing right now.”

Her video was shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, where X owner Elon Musk claimed that Ocasio-Cortez was "just not that smart." Musk announced earlier this week that he plans to visit the southern border.

Immigration has been a growing problem for New York and New York City. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) has been busing immigrants to the Big Apple, among other major Democratic-led cities. Last week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams slammed President Joe Biden for not meeting with him during a three-day trip to the city amid the growing crisis.

On Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said that her state has reached its limit with illegal immigrants and that "there is a limit to what we can do."

Last month, Ocasio-Cortez described immigration as "arguably this administration’s weakest issue," adding that residents are still welcoming but that the people of New York need "partnership from the federal government."

"There are very clear recommendations and suggestions that we have made to the administration to provide relief on this issue, and it’s my belief that some of the hesitation around this has to do with a fear around just being seen as approving or providing permission structures, or really just the Republican narratives that have surrounded immigration," the representative said.
