Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) became the first account on Jack Dorsey‘s Bluesky to hit 1 million followers.
Bluesky launched in February 2023 in light of Tesla CEO Elon Musk buying Dorsey’s old platform, Twitter, now known as X. In the first two months following its launch, Bluesky saw 360,000 people download the app. By November, it had 20 million users and continues to grow.
“Just hit a million on bluey,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X, on which she has close to 13 million followers.
Meanwhile, other politicians are far behind in joining the platform and garnering anywhere near the same following. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is the only fellow House member to come close with over 187,000 followers, followed by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) with over 98,000. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) come next with over 50,000. Sens. Tina Smith (D-MN) and Ed Markey (D-MA), along with Reps. Don Beyer (D-VA) and Cori Bush (D-MO), come under 50,000.
Republican members of Congress trail even further, as none have followers in the four figures. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has the most followers at over 500, while Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has over 300. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) have under 100 as some have yet to make their first post. The majority of lawmakers from both parties have not joined the platform.

Dorsey launched another platform, Nostr, around the same time, which hasn’t seen nearly as much success, with just over a million users.
