Animal shelters in various parts of Florida are seeing more pets being surrendered in recent weeks following their owners’ being arrested in the Trump administration’s deportation operation.

Three counties in Florida have posted on social media or spoken with local media about household pets brought to their doors because federal immigration authorities detained the owner and may be deported from the United States.

The Humane Society of Broward County, Florida, has seen a handful of animals surrendered for that reason over the past month, spokeswoman Cherie Wachter told the Miami New Times.

In Osceola County near Orlando, the county shelter said a dozen dogs had been turned over after the owners were arrested for their lack of legal immigration status, according to WFTV.

“The situation is very anecdotal … we aren’t receiving the information from law enforcement but rather from other family members, friends, or neighbors,” Director of Communications Tyler Winik wrote in a statement to the local outlet.

The Adopt and Save a Life Rescue Mission nonprofit organization operates across South Florida and has had more than a dozen dogs dropped off because their owners were arrested or deported.

“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated situation. We believe that there are many more cases out there that haven’t reached us yet,” the organization’s Samantha Blain recently told Gulf Coast News Now.

The surrendered animals come in the wake of a national and statewide effort to clamp down on illegal immigrants living in the U.S.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has unleashed a statewide operation, encouraging state and local police to become deputized to carry out federal immigration laws and assist federal partners with arresting and detaining illegal immigrants, which has led to an increase in people coming into custody who cannot bring their animals with them.
