NextImg:Andrew Cuomo slams Trump hush money case - Washington Examiner

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday that former President Donald Trump’s hush money case was politically motivated and should have never been brought to trial.

Cuomo has a particular perspective on the case, given that he was once New York’s attorney general. He commented: “If his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn’t running for president … I’m telling you that case would’ve never been brought.”

Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records late last month in relation to a payment to a pornographic film star during his victorious 2016 presidential campaign.

Though what Cuomo said should be obvious to anyone applying a pragmatic perspective to American politics, his comments are particularly compelling as he himself held office as a Democrat. This argument, that the trial was brought in order to hurt Trump’s chances at reelection, has somehow managed to fall on deaf ears among so many on the Left. Whether it’s Hunter Biden’s conviction not too long after (a coincidence, obviously) or simply the Left’s inability to comprehend basic logic, so many on that side of the aisle are incapable of comprehending the significance of Trump’s trial.

Though no doubt now a controversial figure, Cuomo’s eminent last name and his long career as a Democrat ensure that he continues to wield relative respect among those on the Left.

As such, his comments may bring to light the tyrannical and disturbing nature of Trump’s conviction.

Cuomo’s most substantial comment came when discussing the impact this will have on the public’s perception of the justice system. He commented: “You want to talk about a threat to democracy: When you have this country believing you’re playing politics with the justice system and you’re trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem.”

This idea that Trump is a “threat to democracy” is central to the argument of President Joe Biden’s campaign against the former president. However, Biden provides plenty of ammunition to suggest that his behavior existentially threatens the core principle of our country.

He censored critics of his COVID-19 pandemic response on social media. You’d think that the “highly-educated” class that supports Biden would sniff out the Orwellian nature of such censorship, but clearly, some of us weren’t paying attention in our high school English classes.

He circumvented Congress in 2022 with executive actions that would wipe out student loan debt to the tune of $240 billion. He has bragged about defying the Supreme Court in the name of getting it done.

That’s not to mention the 9 million illegal immigrants who he has allowed to flood the country or the argument that the Democratic primaries were rigged in his favor. The fact that he’s even running at all represents his disdain for true democratic principles. Many polls have shown that Democrats wish they had a different choice, but Biden’s hubris and obsession with power know no bounds.

Attempting to jail his chief political opponent is no doubt the most egregious thing he has done yet to undermine our democracy. But this should come as no surprise to anyone who truly understands Biden’s character.
