Christian musician Mandisa, who got her start on American Idol, died at 47 in her home on Thursday.

“We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details,” Mandisa’s representative wrote on X. “We ask for your prayers for her family and close knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Mandisa became known for her Christian music after appearing on Season five of American Idol, where she finished in the top 10. In 2007, she released her first album, True Beauty.

It wasn’t until her fourth album, Overcomer, that Mandisa received two Grammys in 2014. She won for best contemporary Christian music album and best contemporary Christian music song for the title track.

Colleagues in the music industry took to social media to express their condolences.

“Mandisa loved Jesus, and she used her unusually extensive platform to talk about Him at every turn. Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart,” K-Love Chief Media Officer David Pierce wrote on X. “Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles. Mandisa’s struggles are over, she is with the God she sang about now. While we are saddened, Mandisa is home. We’re praying for Mandisa’s family and friends and ask you to join us.”

“I am so incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of my friend Mandisa,” musician Matthew West wrote. “I will always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting award shows, going on tour, and most of all helping her tell her story in the songwriting room.”

“There was no doubt in my mind that this lady spent much time with her Heavenly Father. And now, she sees Him face to face,” musician Aaron Shust wrote of Mandisa on Instagram. “My prayers are lifted for her family and closest of friends who carry on without the light of their precious Mandisa in this world. Grieving with you.”

Mandisa’s most recent album, Out of the Dark, was released in 2017. She had over 800,000 monthly listeners on Spotify at the time of her death.
