NextImg:Allegedly rogue consultants helped US and Israel aid push

On June 7, the Boston Consulting Group disclosed via an internal email that it fired two senior employees for providing services to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation while allegedly misrepresenting key details about the U.S.- and Israel-backed aid organization. A Washington Examiner review of public records has uncovered new information about the pair of high-level consultants fired by BCG in conjunction with the controversy.

“In October 2024, a BCG team from the U.S., led by two Managing Director and Partners (MDPs), provided pro bono support to help stand up an aid organization intended to operate alongside other relief efforts in Gaza,” a copy of the internal email obtained by the Washington Examiner reads. “The two MDPs leading the project did not disclose the full nature of the engagement, failed to follow BCG’s approval processes, and led us to believe the effort had broad multi-lateral support from several countries and NGOs.”

BCG partners Matt Schlueter and Ryan Ordway are the two people referenced in the email. The consulting firms have wiped their employee webpages, and Schlueter has scrubbed his LinkedIn profile. Their firings come as the GHF weathers controversy over its ties to the Israeli government and allegations of attached military units shooting at civilians, and as BCG faced internal pushback from liberal employees over its business relationship with the GHF.

Schlueter and Ordway both share the distinction of serving in the U.S. armed forces. Ordway is a U.S. Military Academy graduate who spent five years as an infantry officer, including 15 months of combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to his LinkedIn profile. Schlueter, meanwhile, served in the Air Force as a space and missiles officer and a foreign area officer, per an archived copy of his company biography.

Both said they have expertise in defense-related projects, particularly those related to procurement and administration.

During their stints at the BCG, the two authored a number of papers concerning government efficiency, defense innovation, and armed forces recruitment. Schlueter is listed as a co-author of a 2019 RAND Corporation report commissioned by the Defense Department to assess how it ought to approach artificial intelligence.

Ordway, meanwhile, wrote his senior thesis at West Point on “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb: Signs of a Learning Organization,” showing a long-standing interest in understanding terrorism networks.

BCG consultants such as Schlueter and Ordway were key to the operation of the GHF, sources familiar told the Washington Post, describing them as “the operational and analytical rigor behind the foundation.”

The senior consultants have a shared link to the Pentagon.

Both worked with the Defense Management Institute as industry experts, with Schlueter specializing in logistics and Ordway in management. The Defense Management Institute was established by the DOD in 2022 to conduct “nonpartisan research” to “improve the management, organization, performance improvement, and enterprise business operations of the DOD.”

Clues as to Schlueter and Ordway’s political leanings are scant but not totally absent.

Ordway’s LinkedIn profile lists his pronouns, and campaign finance records show that he donated just over $1,000 to Democratic candidates between 2017 and 2020. Schlueter, meanwhile, has no federal or state political contributions made in his name, but his wife donated a little over $1,000 to a Democratic candidate between 2017 and 2023.

All of Schlueter’s wife’s donations, and the vast majority of Ordway’s, went to the congressional campaign of Dan Helmer, a former BCG colleague of the two and a fellow veteran. Helmer is a strong supporter of Israel.

Conservative critics have charged that the BCG’s decision to cut ties with the Israeli-linked GHF was politically motivated, as the firm maintains relationships with the Qatari and Chinese government entities, both of which have been accused of human rights violations. Some even suspect that the BCG may be using Schlueter and Ordway as scapegoats to run away from possibly unfavorable press.

“It’s pretty clear BCG is hanging these partners out to dry,” a source close to the GHF told the Washington Free Beacon. “There’s no way a contract this big went under the radar at BCG.” The BCG denies this, holding that the firings stem from the duo engaging in unauthorized work and allegedly misleading their colleagues.

The BCG and the GHF did not respond to requests for comment.
