President-elect Donald Trump is set to issue a host of executive orders on Inauguration Day in a bid to undo much of President Joe Biden’s policies and to secure his own second-term legacy.
Here’s a rundown of the numerous orders, which were put out in three broad categories: the border, the economy, and “Restoring Common Sense,” as the Trump team put it.
This list will be updated as the new Trump administration releases information.
Border
Trump will sign 10 orders related to the border and immigration.
- An order declaring a national emergency at the border, which will allow the Defense Department to deploy active-duty and National Guard military to the southern border, erect barriers, and work on ways to take down enemy drones.
- An order clarifying the military’s role in protecting the territorial integrity of the United States.
The executive order will direct the military to prioritize borders and territorial integrity in strategic planning for its operations. - An order ending “catch and release” for illegal immigrants, restarting the “Remain in Mexico” program Trump implemented in his first term, and building a wall on the southern border.
- An order designating criminal cartels and others as specifically designated global terrorists.
- An order suspending refugee resettlement for at least four months.
- An order starting an immediate removal process, without the possibility of asylum, for migrants who cross the border and do not meet the criteria for “credible fear,” the first step in claiming asylum.
- An order ending birthright citizenship.
- An order enhancing the vetting and screening of illegal immigrants.
- An order to protect the public against invasion meant to give agencies the authority to deport illegal immigrants and establish Department of Homeland Security task forces to coordinate the removal of gangs and criminals from the U.S.
- An order restoring the death penalty in public safety.
This order will direct the attorney general to seek capital punishment for the murder of law enforcement officers and capital crimes committed by illegal aliens.
Other executive orders expected Monday and in the coming days will expand immigrant detention facilities, shut down the government CBP One app, and implement sanctions against countries that refuse to take back their own citizens.
Economy
- An order combating inflation, according to the transition team.
- An order focused on increasing energy production in Alaska, as the Biden administration took a number of steps to limit drilling in Alaska that were bitterly opposed by Republicans in the state.
- An order “unleashing” American energy.
- An order declaring a national energy emergency.
‘Restoring Common Sense’
- An order “restoring biological truth” and “combatting gender ideology extremism.”
The order is meant to prioritize the protection of privacy and single-sex spaces, including women’s prisons, migrant shelters, and rape crisis centers.
It prohibits the use of taxpayer funds for services related to gender transitions in such facilities.
- An order eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and preferences across the federal government.
It also includes measures to rename government buildings and properties that were given new names by the Biden administration because the old names were considered problematic.
