The Air Force blocked a course about the Tuskegee Airmen in an effort to comply with President Donald Trump’s orders regarding the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings — and then reversed the decision.
Trump has signed several executive orders demanding an end to all DEI initiatives in the week since his inauguration.
The Air Force’s decision to stop the training regarding the Tuskegee Airmen, the nation’s first Black military pilots who served in a segregated World War II unit, and the Women Air Force Service Pilots, the female World War II pilots, was an attempt to comply with the president’s orders, but it has since been undone.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Sunday that the decision was “immediately reversed.”
“While we are currently reviewing all training courses to ensure compliance with the Executive Orders, no curriculum or content highlighting the honor and valor of the Tuskegee Airmen or Women Air Force Service Pilots has been removed from Basic Military Training,” Gen. David W. Allvin, the Air Force chief of staff, said in a statement. “The historic legacy and decorated valor these Airmen embodied during World War II and beyond will continue to guide our newest recruits and all who serve in our ranks.”
Allvin also noted in his statement that, “Disguising and renaming are not compliance, and I’ve made this clear. If there are instances of less-than-full compliance, we will hold those responsible accountable.”
Prior to the reversal, Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) called the ban “malicious compliance” with Trump’s directive.
The Trump administration has repeatedly stated its desire to end the Biden-era DEI efforts across the federal government. Hegseth said Trump would sign additional executive orders on “removing DEI inside the Pentagon.”
