Paloma Faith called out the narrative of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, saying it is sending the wrong message to girls.

The singer and actress known for roles in Pennyworth and Dangerous Liaisons took to Instagram to share her concern.

Paloma Faith attends the Starz television series premiere for Dangerous Liaisons at Cipriani Wall Street on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2022, in New York.

“As a mother of girls, I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,” Faith wrote in an Instagram Stories post that has since disappeared. “Wtf is this s***. Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all.”

Despite her disdain for the film’s storyline, Faith praised black actress Halle Bailey’s role of Ariel in Disney’s live-action reprise of the 1989 animated classic.

“I think Halle gives a good performance and it’s great casting,” Faith said.

The film’s premise centers on a mermaid named Ariel who desires to experience life on land and get to know her crush, Prince Eric. In order to do so, Ariel sells her voice to the sea witch Ursula in exchange for legs. The film explores Ariel’s plight on land and her quest to regain her voice.

Many have criticized Faith’s comments about the film’s narrative, slamming her after she previously shared her support for the animated film.

“When I grow up I want to be the little mermaid,” Faith tweeted in 2009.

Several have accused Faith of not supporting the live-action film because of Bailey’s race.

“So what did you REALLY hate about the live action?” one Twitter user questioned.

Another tweeted: “Oh so you only dislike the ‘moral of the story’ on the new one…. got it!”
