NextImg:ABC considers postponing Dancing with the Stars amid strikes

ABC has been forced to consider postponing its dance competition show in light of one of its celebrities dropping out.

Matt Walsh, who had been paired with Koko Iwasaki for the next season of Dancing with the Stars, is a member of both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild and Federation of Television and Radio Artists. WGA has been on strike for 142 days as of Thursday, while SAG-AFTRA has been on strike for 69 days against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Matt Walsh arrives at the LA Special Screening of Flamin' Hot on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Hollywood American Legion Post 43 in Los Angeles.

Walsh explained he thought the variety show was not a WGA show. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA has released a list of projects that union performers are allowed to work on, including soap operas, music videos, award shows, reality and competition shows, variety and game shows, and talk shows. However, while the show is largely unscripted, Dancing with the Stars has previously had one WGA writer hired to its staff.

"This morning when I was informed by my union, the WGA, that [Dancing with the Stars] is considered struck work I walked out of my rehearsal. I have been and will always stand with my union members of the WGA, SAG, and DGA,” Walsh said in a statement to Deadline. “Beyond our union artists, I am sensitive to the many people impacted by the strike and I hope for a speedy and fair resolution, and to one day work again with all the wonderful people I met at DWTS who tolerated my dancing.”

In the meantime, ABC continues to issue posts on social media promoting the premiere of the show, which is slated to premiere Sept. 26. Despite the cast being announced Thursday, Dancing with the Stars did not post the casting of Walsh to X, formerly known as Twitter. Walsh is the only competitor who is a WGA member and will likely be the only one who would not participate while the WGA strike is occurring.

The hope is, as WGA negotiators have met with AMPTP negotiators Wednesday and Thursday, that the strike ends before the show begins. Hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro appeared on Good Morning America Thursday and did not comment on a postponed premiere.

This is the first time WGA and SAG-AFTRA are both on strike since 1960 when Ronald Reagan was at the helm before he ran for president. WGA boasts a union of 11,500 members who are seeking higher wages from the AMPTP. WGA was last in negotiations with AMPTP in August.

Last fall, Dancing with the Stars premiered exclusively on Disney+ after 16 years on ABC, which is a subsidiary of Disney. The series opted to switch back to a premiere on ABC for its 32nd season.
