Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of England's first king in seven decades.
The anniversary was honored with a 41-gun salute and a statement from King Charles III, who was coronated as England's new monarch earlier this year. He is the eldest of the late queen's four children.

“In marking the first anniversary of Her Late Majesty’s death and my accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us,” Charles said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all.”
The late queen, who served as the United Kingdom's longest-reigning monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Sept. 8, 2022. A funeral service was held for the monarch on Sept. 19 at Westminster Abbey, and a separate service in the U.S. was held at the Washington National Cathedral.
The British Embassy in Washington, D.C., commemorated the anniversary with a post on social media.

“As President Biden graciously said — Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 'defined an era,'" an embassy spokesperson told the Washington Examiner on Thursday.
"Her legacy and deep affection for the USA remains a lasting inspiration to this embassy and so many of our American friends.”
William, Prince of Wales, and his wife Kate spent the day in Wales at a small private ceremony at St. Davids Cathedral. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, honored his late grandmother on Thursday night during an awards ceremony for the U.K. charity WellChild.
“As you know, I was unable to attend the awards last year as my grandmother passed away,” Harry said. “As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her. And that’s precisely why I know, exactly one year on, that she is looking down on all of us tonight, happy we are together, continuing to spotlight such an incredible community."
Charles and the other three children of Elizabeth's, Princes Andrew and Edward and Princess Anne, honored their mother in a private memorial at Balmoral.
Elizabeth has been noted as a unifying force in the country and a pillar of strength amid controversy and the unprecedented global health pandemic caused by COVID-19. She also remained a source of stability for the country following the unexpected death of Princess Diana in 1997 and Harry's decision to leave royal life with his wife. Although the royal family faced accusations of racism from the royal couple, Harry and his wife said the queen was not at fault.

She has also been praised for dedicating her life to one of service to her country, fulfilling a promise she had made to the U.K. at the age of 21.
"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong," Elizabeth said during a speech in 1947.
