An increasing number of adults in the United States are turning to TikTok as their main news source.
The Pew Research Center issued a survey on social media use Thursday, revealing that 20% of those surveyed reported getting news from TikTok this year. Meanwhile, the same survey in 2020 found that only 3% did so.

This was the largest increase among social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Reddit, Rumble, Truth Social, Nextdoor, and WhatsApp. Users of Bluesky and Threads were surveyed for the first time this year, as the platforms launched after 2020.
Among TikTok users, 55% said they regularly get their news from the platform. They were second to X users, of which, 57% said the same about X. This was a 2% decrease for X users from 2020.
X was the only platform that saw a decreased number of people who claimed to use it as their news source. In 2020, 15% of those surveyed used X for news, but five years later 12% said the same.
Women were most likely to use TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram to get the news. Meanwhile, men were most likely to use YouTube, X, and Reddit.
Democratic respondents were more likely than Republicans to say they get news from Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit. An equal share of each party reported regularly getting news from YouTube.
Overall, 53% of those surveyed said they at least sometimes get news from social media. This was largely unchanged from previous years.
