NextImg:83% support national mandate on age verification for pornography sites: Poll

The vast majority of American voters support instituting a national mandate requiring age verification to enter pornography websites, according to a new poll.

A poll requested by the American Principles Project showed 83% of registered voters in the U.S. favor a federal law forcing consumers of pornography to actually prove they are 18 years or older before entering the site.

Most sites only require age confirmation, as opposed to verification.

“It should come as no shock that Americans don’t want their kids watching porn," APP president Terry Schilling said. "Beyond being simple common sense, the evidence is overwhelming that early exposure to sexual content can lead to many terrible consequences for a child’s mental and even physical health."

The poll comes after seven states, including Louisiana, Utah, Virginia, Texas, Mississippi, Montana, and Arkansas, have passed verification laws aimed at protecting children from pornography.

In response, pornography giant Pornhub has stopped operating in many of those states entirely, opting instead to post a public service announcement from an adult actress talking about the laws passed in their state.

APP's poll shows 58% majority of Americans "strongly" favor the laws, and another 25% "somewhat" favor them. Any opposition to the laws was in single digits.

“Unfortunately, for too long, our lawmakers ignored the problem while access to online porn exploded among minors. But now, that’s finally changing," Schilling added. "Despite the gaslighting by the porn industry, legislators are recognizing that action needs to be taken to safeguard our kids, and as this latest poll shows, Americans of all political stripes are behind them."

Schilling added that his organization expects similar laws to come online in similar states, vowing to advocate for the laws "until children are protected in all 50 states."
