NextImg:8 dead, 45 injured as bus carrying farm workers crashes in Florida - Washington Examiner

Eight people were killed and 45 others were injured in a crash involving a bus carrying farm workers on a Florida state highway Tuesday morning.

Around 6:35 a.m., the 2010 International Bus and a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck sideswiped each other, causing the bus to be pushed off the roadway, crash through a fence, and overturn. The bus was carrying roughly 53 workers, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

“At this point, we are conducting a massive traffic homicide investigation,” Lt. Patrick Riordan of the Florida Highway Patrol said at a news conference. “We have a full team, and then some, here on the scene. I can tell you that it’s going to be probably six months, at least, before we conclude, factually, what transpired here today.”

Eight died at the scene, and eight of the injured people are in critical condition. Riordan described the condition of the pickup truck driver as being “very serious.”

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods was asked about the workers’ immigration status, to which he replied, “Everything that I have been told at this point, they all have what they need to be here.

“We’re a very big agricultural county,” he said. “So this time of year, we always have migrant workers that are in our county, that are on buses just like this.”
