Shuwanza Goff, a top White House official for legislative affairs, will depart for a gig at a lobbying firm.

Goff, who served as the floor director for legislative operations for former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), had a solid working relationship with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). She will join the lobbying firm Cornerstone Government Affairs, according to Punchbowl News.

A planned press release announcing Goff's hiring at the firm is expected to feature quotes from McCarthy and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), according to the report. Cornerstone Government Affairs represents an assortment of clients such as Raytheon, CrowdStrike, and NHL.

Shuwanza Goff, left, speaks with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

“Big news for @CGAGroup this morning! Excited to welcome Shuwanza to the team,” Kirsten West, a principal at Cornerstone, tweeted.

During her time in the House, Goff cultivated relations with key players in the lower chamber, including legislative aides from both sides of the political aisle. She had become the first black woman to serve as floor director in House leadership at the time.

Goff joined President Joe Biden's team in 2021 and helped the administration wrangle a slew of bipartisan bills through Congress during his first two years as president.

Her exit comes as the administration faces a divided Congress with Republicans in control of the House and Democrats in control of the Senate, unlike the first two years in which Democrats barely had unified control of both chambers.

Biden and McCarthy will have to work through their differences on how to raise the debt ceiling. Biden demanded Congress send him a "clean bill" to raise the limit on the nation's borrowing authorities, while McCarthy and Republicans have been bent on pairing it with spending cuts.
