The White House on Friday praised Sen. John Fetterman's (D-PA) hospital stay as "the right thing and the brave thing" to do.
Fetterman checked into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Maryland on Wednesday night, citing clinical depression as the reason for his visit.

"Millions of Americans, as you know, go untreated with depression every day," said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. "Sen. Fetterman did the right thing and the brave thing this week by getting the help that he definitely needs. The president is committed to making sure every American can get the help they need too."
The freshman senator is continuing to recover from a debilitating stroke in May. His bout of depression surprised staff and the senator himself, according to NBC News.
Fetterman has continued auditory processing problems from the stroke, which the aide said has obscured what the senator is going through.
He will likely remain in inpatient care for "a few weeks," according to a senior aide.
"This administration has made unprecedented investments in expanding access to mental health services, including better incorporating mental health into the broader healthcare system," Jean-Pierre said. Those efforts include securing bipartisan funding to get more mental health resources to schools, she added, and bolstering the 988 suicide hotline.
President Joe Biden spent nearly three hours at Walter Reed on Thursday morning to take his annual physical. The White House did not respond directly when asked if the two met during their shared time at the facility, with Jean-Pierre saying, "I don’t have any meetings or conversations with Sen. Fetterman to speak to."

Jean-Pierre also did not directly answer a question about whether Biden has spoken with Fetterman's wife since the hospital stay began. Biden and Fetterman campaigned together multiple times ahead of the midterm elections.
"As the president and first lady shared this morning, they are thinking about John, [his wife] Gisele, and the entire Fetterman family today," said Jean-Pierre. "They are grateful to Sen. Fetterman for being an example."
