White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre attempted on Sunday to explain the role of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in shooting down an object over the sky of the U.S.'s northern neighbor "Canadia."

In an interview with MSNBC's Jonathan Capeheart, Jean-Pierre was asked, "Why is the American military shooting something out of the sky over Canada?"

"Because it is part of NORAD. NORAD is part of like a ... part of a ... it's a ... it's a ... NORAD is what you call ... a coalition?" she said as she struggled to find the right words.

The Sunday Show host, Capeheart, then interjected, "A pact of nations?"

"A pact! Exactly," said Jean-Pierre. "And that's why we were able to do that."

She added, "Again, we didn't do it on our own. We did it in a ... in a ... clearly, in, in, in step with Canadia."

Capeheart and Jean-Pierre were discussing the news that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Saturday that an “unidentified object” had been shot down by a U.S. fighter jet over Canadian airspace.

“I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADCommand shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled, and a U.S. F-22 successfully fired at the object,” Trudeau said on Twitter.

Trudeau added that he had spoken to U.S. President Joe Biden and shared that "Canadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object."

It was a "small, cylindrical" object flying at a "high-altitude" of about 40,000 feet and approximately 100 miles from the Canada-U.S. border. NORAD had detected its presence Friday night over Alaska as it crossed into Canadian airspace.

NORAD temporarily shut down airspace over Montana on Saturday "to ensure the safety of air traffic in the area."

Jean-Pierre's press office sustained a shakeup on Friday when Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s White House communications director, officially announced her departure after suggesting in July that she was planning to leave the job. Ben LaBolt was announced to be Bedingfield's replacement.

It was reported last year that Bedingfield had desired the role of White House press secretary early on in the administration but did not actively "make a play for it."
