The White House defended President Joe Biden's ability to handle his job into a second term, dismissing questions over his fitness for office by pointing to his record.

Biden, who would turn 86 at the end of a second term if reelected, maintains a busy schedule as he drives through his agenda, Biden’s press secretary told reporters Thursday.

“This is a president that works day in and day out in a grueling fashion and with a grueling schedule and delivers,” Karine Jean-Pierre said, noting that even Biden’s much younger aides can struggle to keep pace.

“The president always says this, which is, watch him,” Jean-Pierre said. “And if you watch him, you’ll see that he has a grueling schedule that he keeps up with that sometimes some of us are not able to keep up with.”

Biden completed his 2022 physical examination on Thursday after a delay. At 80, Biden is the oldest person to ever serve as president.

The questions come as former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, proposed introducing a mandatory competency test for politicians older than 75 years of age.

Polls show voters remain concerned about Biden’s age and health, despite the White House’s reassurances. The president is expected to announce his 2024 campaign for reelection in the coming months.
