Ralph is known for being one of the original Dreamgirls in the 1981 Broadway production. She portrayed Deena Jones in the show until 1985. She has also performed in the Broadway musical Wicked.

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" is often called "The Black National Anthem," per the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The song comes from a poem written by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900. Later, his brother, John Rosamond Johnson composed music for the lyrics.
