Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) shushed members of his party as they heckled President Joe Biden over his handling of the southern border.
Sitting behind Biden as the president delivered the State of the Union address, McCarthy tried subtly to keep decorum in his caucus while several members chanted, "Border! Border!"

"We now have a record number of personnel working to secure the border, arresting 8,000 human smugglers and seizing over 23,000 pounds of fentanyl in just the last several months," Biden said, prompting the outburst. "Since we launched our new border plan last month, unlawful migration from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has come down 97%. But America’s border problems won’t be fixed until Congress acts."
McCarthy again tried to keep control over the Republicans during Biden's remarks on China. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) shouted a remark on China, and McCarthy again shushed her.

"We're members of Congress. We have a code of ethics of how we should portray ourselves," the speaker said earlier Tuesday. "And that's exactly what we'll do. But we're not going to do childish games tearing up a speech."
His predecessor, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), famously tore up her paper copy of former President Donald Trump's 2020 State of the Union.
