“Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” said Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products at Mattel.

“We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products, and experiences," Silverman explained.

The relaunch will include a new animated series that will debut globally in 2024.

"In creating the new series, it was important to us that we properly reflect the world that kids today live in so that the series can deliver meaningful lessons about navigating it,” said Fred Soulie, senior vice president and general manager of Mattel Television.

“With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care, and dream big. We think that parents, many of whom will fondly remember the original Barney from their own childhoods, will love the show, too," he continued.

The series is being coproduced by Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana alongside Mattel Television. Executive producers include Soulie and Christopher Keenan for Mattel Television and Colin Bohm, Doug Murphy, and Pam Westman for Nelvana.

The revived franchise will include film, YouTube, and music content in addition to the new show.

Mattel also plans to produce a full range of children's products that will include toys, books, and clothing. However, children aren't the only ones to whom Mattel is catering. There will also be apparel and accessories for older fans of the classic Barney.

The move is a part of the company’s larger strategy to revisit some heritage franchises. Recently, Mattel similarly relaunched both Monster High and Masters of the Universe with new content and products.
