On Monday, more than 100 gender activists stormed the Oklahoma Capitol building in protest of legislation that would prohibit healthcare centers from administering chemical treatment or performing surgical sex-change procedures on gender-confused minors.

Putting aside the fact that it is now acceptable for radical protesters to occupy government buildings without being accused of "insurrection," it’s quite telling that gender activists are in an uproar about a series of bills that would do the very thing they claim to want to do: save “trans” lives.

One bill, for example, would prevent those under 18 from undergoing permanent and risky surgical procedures, such as penile inversions and double mastectomies. There is abundant evidence that these procedures have devastating effects on patients’ physical and mental health. In fact, one study from Sweden found that gender-confused persons who underwent sex reassignment were prone to suffer from severe depression and 19 times more likely to commit suicide than those who did not.

Several other reviews, including one conducted by the Obama administration back in 2016, found that there is little or no psychiatric benefit at all to surgical gender interventions. In other words, the so-called “gender-affirming care” for which trans activists are protesting does nothing to ease patients’ dysphoria yet creates a host of other problems.

The testimonies of detransitioners from across the Western world prove as much. Many have spoken of the permanent physical complications and the lasting feelings of regret and confusion from which they now suffer.

It is bad enough to hear an adult describe the remorse and pain that physical transition causes. But to think that children, who lack the capacity to understand the long-term consequences of their decisions, should be permitted to bring that same remorse and pain upon themselves is too awful to put into words. Yet that’s exactly what the gender activists inside Oklahoma’s Capitol building want.

Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) and state lawmakers must hold their ground. Don’t let the radical minority who deny the unmistakable differences between men, women, adults, and children force their delusions onto the rest of the public. If they’d like to ruin their own lives with their grandiose ideas that turn human biology into a mere theory, so be it. But they don’t get to drag down impressionable and unsuspecting children with them.
