Asbury University, a Christian college in Kentucky, has ended its on-campus around-the-clock gathering of prayer and worship that has drawn thousands of visitors each day for nearly two weeks.

The university announced that it would be shifting gears to holding evening services for high school and college students through Thursday and encouraging gatherings to then continue off campus.

People gather from across the world at Asbury University, a Christian college in Kentucky, for a non-stop prayer and worship service that began on Feb. 8, 2023 and lasted 11 days.

Asbury President Kevin Brown said the decision was made in order to not neglect the “outpouring” but instead move “toward a more sustainable campus experience for our students that fosters predictability, well-being, and continuity” while allowing classes to resume.

“Whether you call this a revival, or a renewal or an outpouring, or an awakening, what we have experienced on this campus these last few weeks is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my entire life,” Brown said.

“The time has come where we realize we need to host this differently,” Brown added, noting off-campus locations in the area are being secured. “We know this is not a conclusion to hungry hearts that are being stirred and responding by seeking Jesus Christ.”

Videos of what is being called a spiritual “revival” have gone viral on social media as the gathering began on Feb. 8 and lasted for 13 days.

Since, other universities have begun hosting gatherings. Christian writer Greg Gordon noted that Lee University and Samford University are holding their own prayer and worship services.

Asbury noted that additional details regarding off-campus services beginning on Friday will be released as they are made available.

“Let this fire blaze in other places that ultimately points to God,” Brown said. “Other schools, other churches, our communities. Find those dark places and go there and be light.”

Asbury said the nonstop services drew people from around the world.
