NextImg:If Biden is serious about the border, he must remove Mayorkas — if not, then Congress should

President Joe Biden seems to think that he can convince everyone that he is taking the border crisis seriously. If so, he should fire Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

If not, Congress should begin the process of removing Mayorkas itself.

During his State of the Union address, Biden laid blame for the border crisis at the feet of Congress. This would be entirely fair if he had not repealed effective border policies on the very first day of his presidency, causing a massive surge at the border. It would be fair if he had not eased up on deportations and unjustly punished Border Patrol agents for doing their jobs based on left-wing misinformation.

MAYORKAS RECEIVES ICY WELCOME FROM 'LIFELESS' BORDER PATROL AGENTS

Biden responded to GOP calls during his speech to “secure the border” with a dismissive, “You got it.” But if he is serious, then Mayorkas must go. Mayorkas has lost the confidence of Border Patrol, which is unsurprising, considering he joined in on Biden’s witch hunt against Border Patrol agents over a fake controversy and has repeatedly claimed that the border is “secure” when it obviously is not.

No one is under the impression that removing Mayorkas from office will actually fix the issues at our southern border. After all, he is simply doing what Biden asks of him. But Mayorkas has come to symbolize the ineffectual, destructive border policies pushed by the Biden administration. There is no path forward while Mayorkas remains in his current position.

Of course, Biden won’t actually move on from Mayorkas, either out of loyalty to him or (more likely) because Biden doesn’t actually care about the border crisis. Therefore, the onus falls on Congress to send the message to Biden that this is unacceptable. Mayorkas is the avatar of Biden’s failed border policies. If Congress wants to be treated seriously, it must send a message that ignoring immigration law has consequences and that there can’t be a compromise with the Biden administration when Mayorkas (and Biden) see no issue with the status quo at the border.

Mayorkas has failed. Biden has allowed him to fail. If Biden won’t do something about it, then Congress should.

If House Democrats don’t have the stomach for it, then House Republicans should start the process of impeaching Mayorkas without them and leave it to Senate Democrats to defend Biden’s border crisis. Democrats will either need to defend the indefensible or finally recognize that the status quo must be changed.
