NextImg:Here is the real state of our nation

Last year was another year of broken promises. President Joe Biden failed to address the border crisis, inflation reached historic levels, and Democrat-run cities became less safe.

This week, Biden delivered his second State of the Union address, where he had an opportunity to present solutions to a laundry list of crises and threats our country is facing that could have grave implications for our future. He chose not to do so.

STATE OF THE UNION 2023: BIDEN RECYCLES REJECTED INFLATION REDUCTION ACT HEALTH PROPOSALS

Biden has spent the last two years touting his administration’s efforts to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, provide security and aid to the people of Ukraine, advance equity and racial justice, provide student debt relief for middle- and working-class families, and achieve climate-related goals. But he has no plan to fix all of the self-made crises he has created since he took office.

Let me address the state of our nation for you since Biden failed to do so on Tuesday night.

Until January 2023, Biden said there were “more important things” than visiting the border. He left Vice President Kamala Harris in charge as the “border czar.” Meanwhile, he seems to have no clue how bad the border crisis has really become. Since the beginning of his presidency, 5.8 million illegal immigrants have crossed our southern border, and so far, just this fiscal year, at least 38 people on the terrorist watch list were caught trying to enter the United States between ports of entry. We also have deadly drugs, such as fentanyl, that are flowing across our borders at alarming rates and running rampant on our streets.

At what point does the administration take this seriously? It has no plans to enforce federal immigration laws. Even if the Biden administration did not care about illegal immigration, does he care about drugs and their effects on our children? His apparent plan to do nothing will only entice more illegal crossings and more drugs.

Not only is our nation facing a crisis at the border and an opioid crisis that has taken the lives of far too many, but our influence on the world stage has significantly weakened. We need to bolster engagement with our allies and work to counter the increasing threats we face from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia, among others. Just last week, a Chinese spy balloon was spotted floating in our airspace and flew over missile fields in Montana — it had no purpose being there. And we are continually receiving increasing threats each and every day. This is a matter of national security. Biden needs to not only stand up to foreign adversaries, but he needs to be transparent with the public to uphold our democracy.

On Biden's first day in office, he canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, killing 11,000 jobs. Now, he’s limiting the mining of natural materials such as cobalt in the U.S., forcing producers to deal with Chinese-owned mining companies in Africa. We shouldn’t rely on foreign adversaries for natural gas or fund mining projects overseas when we have the ability to mine natural materials right here at home. We must reopen domestic energy production and mine domestically. This will not only help drive down costs for consumers and ease inflationary pressure on America's families, but it’s in our best interest.

Families, workers, and small business owners across the country are suffering from record-high inflation — it’s eating up every last penny in our pockets. According to a recent survey, nearly 72% of middle-income families say they are financially falling behind their cost of living due to inflation.

Republican governors are the ones creating jobs and leading the economy in the face of massive inflationary headwinds from Biden and the Democrats’ radical economic agenda. For the first time in almost 40 years, there are now more jobs in Florida, a Republican-led state, than there are in New York.

This is the state of our nation. We need a return to common sense. We need to uphold our commitment to democracy and the Constitution. We need to fill the wedge that has divided us as a country.

The road we are on is not sustainable. The Republican Party is offering commonsense solutions that support an open, free economy and protect human rights, our freedoms, and our democracy. If the Democrats and the Biden administration are willing to work across the aisle in good faith and act with civility, I am confident that we will be able to tackle some of the most pressing problems our country faces.
