NextImg:Hawley calls for Biden administration to focus on China instead of Ukraine

The Biden administration should turn its attention away from Ukraine and focus on the looming threat from China , according to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO).

"I think the thing to do is to make it just abundantly clear that we've got to change course, and we can start with the Ukraine aid. Listen, I voted for aid to Ukraine early on. I was in favor of targeted — I had no idea that we were going to fight an endless proxy war and do nation building there because that's not what we said we're going to do [in the] beginning," Hawley said at a Heritage Foundation event on Thursday. "But lo and behold, here we are now. So I think it should make abundantly clear the current policy has to stop."

WHITE HOUSE SAYS NO INDICATION THREE OBJECTS SHOT DOWN WERE CHINESE SURVEILLANCE

His comments come roughly a week before the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The West is rapidly trying to arm Ukraine ahead of expected Russian and Ukrainian offensives.

While top Pentagon officials do not believe China would invade Taiwan imminently, Hawley believes that "if China were to invade Taiwan today, they would prevail."

"Let me say that again," he added. "If China were to invade Taiwan today, they would prevail, which is why we are at an inflection point, a moment where we have to make some tough decisions, and I would just submit to you a moment for real change. It is time to adopt a different foreign policy, a nationalist foreign policy."

To Hawley, the United States is unable to handle both adversaries simultaneously, saying, “Ukraine or China — we can’t do both at the same time,” he said. The European Union “must take the responsibility for Europe.”

The Department of Defense's national security strategy calls China its "pacing challenge" and describes the People's Liberation Army as the only power that has the intent and capability to reshape the international order in their favor, while the administration has doled out roughly $27 billion of military aid to Ukraine to fight against Russia's unprovoked invasion . The strategy calls Russia an "acute threat."

A majority of both political parties support aiding Ukraine, though there is a faction of the Republican Party that thinks the U.S. should stop.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) introduced a new resolution in the House last week with 10 co-sponsors calling for the U.S. to end aid to Ukraine.
