The victim of the break-in, an 80-year-old man, was in his home when at least two suspects, identified as a male and female, approached the home and knocked on his door, police said.
When he opened the door, the two suspects forced their way into the home and a brawl ensued, according to the report.
The elderly man and Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card holder shot the male suspect in the chest, police said.
After the shooting, the suspects sought medical attention at Resurrection Hospital, a local hospital where their alleged victim is also receiving treatment.
Both suspects are in police custody, and both the male suspect and the 80-year-old man are reported to be in critical condition.
