A Washington D.C. man confessed to police that he decapitated and dismembered a handyman before leaving the remains in his backyard, authorities said.

Lavaughn Barnes, 32, told police that, after he killed his victim, identified as Abdulio Arias-Lopez, he placed the handyman's head, arms, and documents into a trash bag, according to a report citing court documents filed Thursday.

That bag was later taken to a landfill by city sanitation officials, prosecutors said.

Metropolitan Police Department officers discovered the victim's other remains on Feb. 3 in the yard behind a Brookland neighborhood duplex, where Barnes lived in the basement.

The 32-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday in connection to the death of Arias-Lopez, who was reportedly showing Barnes paint before he was killed. Arias-Lopez had intended to paint the kitchen, but when he walked away, Barnes supposedly shot him with a stun gun, stabbed him twice, then used an ax to take him apart.

An official cause of death could not be determined, and the remains of Arias-Lopez were found to be skeletal and "mummified," according to the report.

The report noted that investigators and experts suggest that the remains might have been at the Brookland residence since November.

The remains in the yard were discovered when Barnes' sister told him to clean bamboo in the yard, court documents read. The remains were discovered upon doing so, and Barnes and his sister called the police, according to the documents.

A search warrant was carried out, and Barnes later called, confessing to the grisly slaying, the report noted. Cadaver dogs discovered evidence of blood around the duplex, and various weapons were found, police said.

Barnes is facing second-degree murder charges.

His lawyer, Anthony Matthews, said at a Thursday D.C. Superior Court hearing that authorities had "no probable cause" to charge Barnes and that statements his client had given to police were "suspect at best."

"This appears incredibly random," Magistrate Judge Renee Raymond said.

"The decedent just happened to be there. The extra step of beheading the decedent and removing his limbs — for no reason that Mr. Barnes can himself point to — scream out that there is no condition or combination of conditions that will reasonably assure the safety of the community."

Barnes was detained pending a March 29 hearing, according to the report.
