NextImg:CNN set to keep Don Lemon with condition of ‘formal training’

CNN CEO Chris Licht announced that host Don Lemon has agreed to participate in training and will return to the network’s morning show on Wednesday.

Lemon took an extended absence from his role as co-host of CNN This Morning after making controversial remarks last Thursday that suggested Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was past her prime.

“I sat down with Don and had a frank and meaningful conversation,” Licht wrote in a memo Monday night, according to reports. “He has agreed to participate in formal training, as well as continuing to listen and learn.”

“We take this situation very seriously,” Licht reportedly added. “It is important to me that CNN balances accountability with fostering a culture in which people can own, learn and grow from their mistakes. To that end, Don will return to CNN This Morning on Wednesday.”

On Tuesday morning, CNN This Morning co-host Poppy Harlow opened the show confirming Lemon would return on Wednesday.

After announcing her candidacy, Haley called for politicians older than 75 to participate in “mandatory mental competency tests.” Lemon reacted to her statement during his CNN This Morning show last week, saying it made him “uncomfortable.”

"This whole talk about age makes me uncomfortable," Lemon said. “I think it’s the wrong road to go down. She says people, you know, politicians are suddenly not in their prime. Nikki Haley isn't in her prime, sorry. When a woman is considered to be in her prime in her 20s and 30s and maybe 40s."

Harlow asked Lemon to clarify what he meant by a woman's "prime for childbearing.” Lemon told Harlow to "Google it."

Media personality Megyn Kelly reacted to the news of Lemon's return, calling it a "joke."

"What a joke," Kelly tweeted late Monday. “'Formal training' on what? How to be a decent human being? Good luck."

In response to Lemon’s comments, Haley said attacks are nothing new for her.

"I have always made the liberals' heads explode," Haley told Fox's America's Newsroom last week. "They can't stand the fact that a minority, conservative female would not be on the Democratic side because they know I pull independents. They know I pull suburban women. They know I pull minorities over to what we are trying to do."

Lemon later apologized, saying his comments were “inartful and irrelevant.”

It is unclear whether Lemon’s return to CNN This Morning will include addressing the situation on-air.
