United States Capitol Police officers captured a suspected police impersonator carrying a stash of knives and other weapons Monday following a tip from the United States Secret Service, Capitol Police said.

The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. when a Capitol Police Bicycle Response Team officer identified a man wanted for questioning by the Secret Service close to corner of Third Street and Madison Drive, NW, according to a Capitol Police press release.

Officers of the Secret Service uniformed division had noticed the suspect, 37-year-old Max Eli Viner, minutes before he was spotted by Capitol Police.

Capitol Police officers searched Viner and discovered multiple knives on his person, including a change saw blade, according to the press release.

"The United States Secret Service quickly arrived on scene, searched the suspect's SUV, and found fake police equipment," the release read.

Shell casings, a gas mask, and at least one smoke grenade were also recovered from Viner's Ford Explorer, according to the release.

"This is another example of how our teams work closely with our partner law enforcement agencies to keep everyone safe. These partnerships are critical," U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said.
