A California teenager is in custody awaiting trial on charges of selling fentanyl to an undercover federal agent who was unwittingly allowed into his home to complete a $2,700 deal.

Alejandro Angel Lopez, 19, met with undercover agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration several times between July and November 2022 to buy fentanyl in Oakland, the Mercury News reported.

His final deal happened when he met agents in the parking lot of an auto supply store in November to deliver 4 ounces. Now he could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Lopez was tricked from the start when an acquaintance who started working with the DEA as an informant set up a drug deal and introduced him to the agent. Lopez unwittingly agreed to sell the agent 4 ounces of methamphetamine and half a pound of fentanyl in July 2022.

Congress has voted to temporarily extend a sweeping tool that has helped federal agents crack down on drugs chemically similar to fentanyl. The Senate on Thursday, April 29, 2021, approved legislation extending until October an order that allows the federal government to classify so-called fentanyl analogues as Schedule I controlled substances. The drugs are generally foreign-made with a very close chemical makeup to the dangerous opioid. (U.S. Attorneys Office for Utah via AP, File)

The pair met on a street corner, but when the agent asked for a bigger stash of drugs, Lopez said he had that amount at home. He got inside the agent’s car, and the pair drove to Lopez’s house and went inside. The agent purchased 12 ounces of drugs for $2,700 and drove Lopez back to the street corner.

Lopez is being held without bail, and his next court appearance is in March.
