Last Thursday night, an 84-year-old man shot and wounded a black 16-year-old who had gone to the wrong house in Kansas City to pick up his twin brothers. The teen fortunately survived, and the shooter turned himself in and was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Was the shooting a hate crime? CNN’s Don Lemon tries to avoid talking about race, but in this case he made an exception and asked the man’s grandson how he knows his grandfather is a racist:

“Grandson of white homeowner who shot black teen speaks out.”

Who at CNN even thought to track down the grandson and get his response, anyway? Did they pre-interview the guy so they knew he was going to say this?
