All lies, when discovered, destroy trust. One lie is bigger than the rest.
Lies are generally not told for their value but rather for what comes next. We were lied to about Trump being a Russian stooge in order to cripple his presidency and sock it to him for the crime of beating Hilary Clinton. We were lied to about the source of Covid so as to hide Tony Fauci’s illegal gain-of-function work outside of the U.S. We were lied to as to the safety and efficacy of the mRNA vaccines so that we would take them like sheep and not think about possible heart damage or premature death. Lies have their purposes, usually nefarious.
One lie is bigger than them all: species-to-species evolution. Before you close this page, let me explain. When I was at Harvard, I was assigned to work on an amazing enzyme. Enzymes are proteins that can perform chemical reactions. There are thousands of unique enzymes and they are the ones who break down food and build up our cells. The specific enzyme I studied was involved in sugar metabolism and could perform 10,000 reactions per second, which is a billion times faster than the same reaction just occurring in solution without the enzyme. The specific version of this enzyme I studied involved a manmade mutation that made a very slight change in the enzyme active site. Activity dropped by a factor of 3,000.
If one goes through the traditional K-12 and university schooling, he will be taught that there was a big bang that set the world in motion. By processes never explained, subatomic particles became atoms, which somehow got together to make molecules and by a bigger, unknown step, grouped together in order to make a living cell. This cell went on to become more sophisticated and through evolution all of the various living creatures in the world came into existence. No need to invoke God. We’ve got this covered.
But like with Covid and Russiagate, if you ask enough questions, a lot of things do not make sense. Nobody has explained or shown how nonliving chemicals came together, put a membrane around themselves and thus became a living entity that could eat and reproduce. More difficult, if one looks at species that are supposedly evolutionarily related, he sees that there are many proteins that are not so similar between these species. He also sees that the DNA that codes the same protein in the two species may be far from identical. We know that many cancers involve a single DNA chemical change at a critical point in the 3 billion DNA molecules we have in our genome. Our friends in the biological sciences wish to tell us that species could undergo massive, wholesale DNA changes and not only not be damaged but actually become even better. When I studied my enzyme at Harvard, I saw that a very small change pretty much killed enzyme activity, which made my life miserable as it became very hard to measure the enzyme’s presence. A Nobel laureate, Wally Gilbert, tried to reduce my enzyme from 250 amino acids—which seemed like evolutionary leftovers—to a few key amino acids to perform the same reaction. He never succeeded.
The evolutionary theory, more than any idea or event, could take God out of people’s lives. If everything just happened by itself, who needs God—which means who needs religion or religious values? The pesky problems of where did the material for the Big Bang come from, and how did dead chemicals become a single living cell, and how did organisms become more sophisticated—and thus violate the laws of entropy—without being destroyed by massive changes in DNA during evolutionary changes could be brushed away. I once sent a paper to Nature. I looked at a stretch of protein from bacteria and dogs. The six amino acids were identical—good news for evolution! But when one looked at the DNA that codes those amino acids, 67 percent of the DNA bases were different. How could such changes occur naturally and not blow up the genome and kill the transitional species between bacteria and dogs? Oh, and by the way, DNA is read in threes, that is every three molecules determine the precise amino acid to be added to a growing protein molecule. If you add or subtract one or two DNA bases, you throw off the “reading frame”, thus making any future protein pure gibberish. Nature returned my manuscript unpublished.
I don’t believe that the theory of evolution was cooked up in order to kick out God. Darwin made his very general observations about various species and their skeletal predecessors. But once one could rely on a God-free theory of life, then anyone who clung to one of the traditional religions was considered a hillbilly or ignoramus. I remember a Science editorial expressing shock that a significant percentage of Nobel Prize winners believed in God. They took solace in the biggest fish in the pond being hardcore atheists.
As I wrote previously, belief in God only has value if there is an alternative explanation. If we saw a hand come out of the clouds and save someone falling off of a cliff, we would have a hard time offering a natural explanation for the person who fell not being injured. On the other hand, if that person fell and landed on soft ground—as our son did after falling 30 feet—and survived, then we can either attribute the outcome to God’s good graces or incredible good luck of falling in exactly the right spot and not over some rocky crag.
Evolution is a wonderful explanation for the living world around us that has no basis in scientific reality. Invoking millions of years and processes unknown and presently not reproducible, scientists simply say that it is a fact and like with the Covid/pangolin nexus, tell you to keep your mouth shut if you think otherwise. I have looked at proteins between species that are connected on evolutionary trees. And while some may be very similar, there are those that are either wildly different or have added features—something one would normally have to explain as how they could have been added without putting the host at risk of DNA mistakes that could be fatal. While people get taller and bugs become more drug-resistant, inter-species evolution is impossible.
If science is so sure of evolution, then let our colleagues allow for the conversion of nonliving chemicals into a functional living cell by natural means. Let them use natural processes to coax that cell to become a more sophisticated species with 10-20 percent changes in DNA. There is no question that cells can change and adapt; my graduate work involved adding circular pieces of DNA (plasmids) to bacteria in order to get the latter to produce an enzyme of interest in large quantities. One can add antibiotic resistance to bacteria. But no one ever went to bed with E. coli growing in the incubator and woke up to find Salmonella in its place. Or as a German rabbi living at the time of Darwin put it, “Nobody planted wheat, only to harvest barley.”
Evolution undermined the God-derived values in Western societies. When one sees people stealing goods from Walmart or pummeling concertgoers in Cincinnati, he can trace the loss of values to the removal of God from public education and life. If there is no God, then there is no “thou shall not steal”, “thou shall not kill”, etc. You can’t have the latter without the former. Sure, we pass plenty of similar laws, but if people conclude that they can get away with crime and not be seen by fellow men, they may just go ahead and steal, kill, assault, etc. Look at Western cities and see the garbage they have become and realize that evolution’s secular chickens have come home to roost.
