Leftist Intersectionality Grows Stranger by the Day

The schism among Democrats is growing in ways we’ve not seen before. Jonathan Chait, a writer for The Atlantic, recently pulled back the veil on the infighting among them and it’s striking. The conflict between so-called moderate Democrats and the party’s Leftist faction is reaching fever pitch as the two sides battle for the heart and soul of the party.

In reporting on a Leftist event called Persuasion 2025, Chait’s October 6 analysis of the symposium concluded, “No compromise with the electorate was the conference’s standing order. This doctrine might sound irrational to anyone who recognizes that winning elections demands the support of that very electorate.” (Italics in original).

Chait’s conclusion is bolstered by conference participant Anat Shenker-Osorio, a consultant who earns her living counseling individuals and organizations. According to Shenker-Osorio, “Conventional wisdom says to meet people where they are. But, on most issues, where they are is unacceptable.” It’s a political strategy that suggests a bumper sticker reading, ‘Vote for me because you’re wrong.’ Good luck with that.

Strange as this may be, it doesn’t reflect Trump Derangement Syndrome like the October 2 Reddit post from someone called ‘r/Deep (expletive deleted) Value’, bemoaning the decline in retail prices. “Costco is quietly slashing prices. This feels wrong,” reads the post. Inflation’s downward arc since President Trump’s reelection appears to be a source of ongoing anxiety for the post’s author. “If this is what it looks like at Costco - the most stable, boring buy-in-bulk fortress of consumerism - then I don’t really want to know what’s coming next.”

But this is perfectly normal in the opinion of Robert Reich, a university professor and former secretary of labor for Bill Clinton. In his October 5 Substack post, Reich addressed TDS by explaining, “It’s a rational response to a nation that’s becoming ever more disordered.” According to Reich, it’s not merely rational, “It’s a sensible reaction to a society becoming sicker and more stressed.” Sicker and more stressed over paying less for buying in bulk seems like a stretch.

Among the issues swirling through culture and politics today, none is more disconnected from reality than transgender ideology. USA Today columnist Sara Pequeño writes, “It’s time for cisgender people to stand up for trans rights,” and the prescription for doing so includes giving money to people who embrace trans ideology and picking fights with your friends and family.

Pequeño’s column includes some pull quotes from an interview with ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio, renown for losing a Supreme Court case in which she argued in favor of surgically mutilating children and corrupting their endocrine systems with dangerous levels of contraindicated hormones. “Strangio… gave clear directions for how people can support trans people in ways ranging from challenging comments from others who are ‘just asking questions’ to financially supporting individuals in their community.”

The net net is that we’re not allowed to even ask about boys pretending to be girls and vice versa. We’re also not allowed to notice the presence of this ideology when people murder children praying in Catholic churches, gun down students and staff at Presbyterian schools, influence alleged political assassins, are charged with raping boys, or stalk a Supreme Court justice with murderous intent.

The USA Today columnist says we need to start, “challenging that coworker or family member who doesn't believe it's fair for trans women to play on sports teams that align with their gender.” I’ve had a few people try to pick fights about transgender ideology but am uncertain whether they write checks to the neighbor boy playing on the girl’s softball team

When viewed as a Venn diagram, something liberals love to do, we’re left with a strange example of intersectionality. At the center of the intersecting circles of Trump Derangement Syndrome, the trajectory of the Democrat Party, and transgender ideology, we find something sad. It’s a portrait of rage, denial and intolerance, one that tells us to start fights with people we know, that it’s rational to complain about low prices and that disagreement is unacceptable. This cannot be healthy for individuals or society.

Watching this happen leaves one oscillating between amusement and pity. It may be entertaining to see Democrats argue with each other as they await some hero to cut the Gordian Knot they’ve tied for themselves, but I cannot help shaking my head and praying that these broken people might be healed.

It may be that the Leftist coterie among Democrats senses growing national power given the popularity of Socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race but that seems unlikely. Were that the case, Democrats would be singing kumbaya in unison rather than fighting with each other, and this fight isn’t nearly over yet.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
