Have you ever gone to a concert hoping to be preached to? Have you gone to a movie hoping you and your politics will be attacked? There’s nothing like a planned good time to have politics crammed down your throat like Brian Stelter shoves donuts down his, right? Of course not. You go places and buy tickets for things because you want to be entertained. But politics is permeating everything these days to the point that you can’t escape it, especially when you desperately want to.
As a conservative, I always knew the band I was going to see or the movie I was about to watch involved a lot of people who absolutely hate my politics. It’s part of the deal and, honestly, I never really cared. Most concerts I’ve been to I attended for free because friends of mine worked for record labels and could get me in with backstage passes for nothing. Of course, none of them were huge bands, or at least huge yet – a few went on to become something bigger like Weezer – but most were mid-level 90s bands that had a few songs on the radio and quickly went away.
All were liberal. As was just about everyone in every movie I love. When my choices are go to the movies I like or watch crap, I’ll let taste override politics every time.
That being said, and now that I don’t really go to concerts anymore (the few musicians I still like don’t really tour – looking at you, Paul Westerberg) and with 8 and 6 year old girls, any non- animated movie I’m seeing these days in on iTunes.
That being said, the mentality of the “artists” remains decidedly left-wing.
First off, let me say that I don’t really think most of the virtue signaling morons at the MTV Awards really care about anything political or are smart enough to even spell the word. So, when Sabrina Carpenter – a woman constantly trying to look sexy but only succeeding looking greasy and vapid – tries to preach about trans issues, no one cares.
Even though the politics are hollow and knee-jerk, they are ever-present. At a music festival in the UK, some unknown rapper chanting “Death, death to the IDF!” and a crowd of lemmings chanting along with it. Who went there for that? No one.
Note the lack of argument, just a declaration about as deep as a Jimmy Kimmel thought. The UK is locking people up for Twitter jokes and thoughts their progressive government does not approve of and calling for the extermination of Jews is just another day that ends in “Y.”
The only thing worse than most artists is most governments. They love to tax the hell out of people while doing all they can to control them. It’s not just the UK. Germany is banning candidates for office for the “extremist crime” of liking the Lord of the Rings books. France and England are preparing to recognize Gaza as an independent nation while it is governed by a terrorist organization.
Nations that are our allies are, it turns out, not on the side of liberty at all. I recognize this isn’t exactly breaking news, but it is worth noting and necessary to remind people of every once in a while.
The establishment in Australia is declaring its citizenry to be “white nationalists” for the crime of not wanting their country to be invaded by fake refugee claims.
Aside from Kia and Hyundai, the K-Pop band BTS is probably South Korea’s most successful export in the last 50 years. Now their government is going after Bang Si-hyuk for the “crime” of seeming to have earned too much money from taking his entertainment company public. That ranks up there with prosecuting Donald Trump for taking out a loan and paying it back with interest in a timely fashion, meanwhile Nancy Pelosi is now worth more than a third of the countries on the planet and Ilhan Omar has a net worth of up to $30 million. Not only is there no interest in those stories, there’s no interest in the concept. It’s good to be on the side of the powers that be.
Make money on your own and you’re a target, anywhere on Earth, suckle the government teat to make your fortune and they’ll name a building after you.
Somewhere along the line the narrative got broken; everything was turned on its head. Entertainers with the morals of a porn star and the intelligence of a lead paint chip-eater became arbiters of truth, justice and righteousness. Meanwhile, normal and successful people became “problematic” and an enemy who must be targeted for punishment. A society cannot long survive by punishing their successful while rewarding the vapid, nor would one deserve to.
