Both plaintiff and defense attorneys have delivered opening statements in what many are calling the “Trial of the Century” and a landmark Covid death lawsuit. For background on the case, see here and here.

Scott Schara’s attorney began by telling Grace Schara’s story: a high-functioning 19-year-old woman with Down syndrome. (You can read details about Grace’s death in a Covid hospital in 2021 here.) He explained the charges in the case for the 12-member jury; see here for details.

The defense countered by blaming the family for preventing healthcare workers from properly caring for Grace, who they characterized as having advanced Covid. The attorney claimed that the family prevented her from being ventilated, which he said was the only thing that could have saved her life. He also blamed her parents for having attempted to treat Grace at home, using ivermectin and following the treatment protocol recommended by Dr. Pierre Kory’s Front Line Covid Critical Care Alliance.

The attorney also attacked Scott Schara’s character, implying that he is a crazed conspiracy theorist who acted antagonistically toward hospital staff, and that he turned off alarms in Grace’s hospital room where he was acting as her patient advocate, thereby endangering her life. The defense ran through a litany of expert witnesses who will justify the medical staff’s orders and behaviors during Grace’s treatment in the hospital.

First to testify for the plaintiff will be Cindy Schara, Grace’s mother. The New American and Children’s Health Defense are livestreaming the entire case, set to run through June 20. You can watch the livestream of the court case here.
